In fact, the story of the development of Bristol is one of people building homes and suburbs on the hills, and leaving the often steep-sided valleys well alone. Bristol is famous as a city of hills - from the steep roads up to Clifton, Redland and St Andrew's, round to South Bristol's Windmill Hill, Totterdown and Bedminster Down.
